The Student Assistance Program is designed to assist school personnel in identifying issues which pose a barrier to a student’s learning and school success. It is a state-mandated program which was first created in the 1980’s in order to address students at risk for drug and alcohol problems.
Today, the SAP team addresses many additional student concerns, such as: mental health issues, behavioral and emotional problems, attendance, bullying, and violence. We do this by providing education, prevention, early identification, intervention, referral, and support services.
Who can make a referral?
Students are usually referred to the SAP team by parents, teachers, administrators, a concerned friend, or sometimes, even by self-referral.

What happens after a referral is made?
The student’s parents are contacted. If they consent, data is collected, interventions are suggested, and the student may be referred for additional services.
